Comment: First half ironman. Great weather. Met my goal.

Race Report:

This was my first half ironman ever. Coming off an excellent performance at the Columbia Triathlon, I was prepared for the swim - bike, but knew the run would be difficult. I had good swim at 27:19. The current was fvorable this year (from what they tell me). I was expecting to be in the water for 35 minutes, and was surprised to exit so quickly.

T1 was 2:47, pretty good for the long run up to and through the transition area.

I felt good getting on the bike, not pushing too hard on the swim. I wanted to feel fresh on the bike. I had a very fast bike for me in 2:26.20 (23.1 ave). My goal was 2:30 so I beat that pretty well. No wind to speak of except for a short stretch near the end. Nutrition was not a problem. I had been training with cliffshots, Succeed salt tablets, Anti-fatigue pills, and ATP. Also ate some fig bars. I saw lots of drafters. At one point around the Blackwater Park entrance, this pack of 5-6 guys from the 35-39 age group came flying by. I was riding with 2 guys from my age group, so we started pacing them closely. We made a left turn somewhere and saw a referee motorcycle. The refs got on the cycle and sped up to the pack. I think all of those guys got penalties because I saw them in the penalty tent a few miles up the road. The lesson learned here is if you are going to draft don't do it for a long time or in a pack. I had plenty of drink and gels along the way. I pushed a little hard the last several miles. I think this hurt me on the run.

T2 was good also at 2:08. Then the ugly run.

I got off the bike feeling a little tired, had trouble moving my legs. Paced an 8 minute mile for the first 6 miles. My goal was 1:45 or 8 min miles. My left calf muscle was very tight from the start and really started to hurt after just 3 miles. Then at the turn around my right knee started to hurt. Saw several MMTC members closing in on me going the other way - that was a little demoralizing. I must have done a couple 9:00 min miles around 9 or 10. Felt horrible. I got tired of drinking and eating anything but water, felt nausious after I took a rootbeer GU - that was aweful! I limped in the last few miles picking it the last mile even with all the pain. Completed the run in 1:49. Finished the race in 4:48:26. Goal was 5:00. Overall very good for my first half ironman after just a year and a half of training. Need to work even more on the run, especially the endurance side.

It was nice to hang out with the MMTC club members. It's good competition. I will be coming after all those MMTC members that beat me in 2008!! Watch out!!
