Comment: Good to back into Tri's - first one in 12 years

Race Report:

Bitter cold at the start. 40 degree air and 60 degree water - not much fun, but with wet suit, I really didn't notice it. This was my first triathlon in 12 years. I did a lot of them in my youth (20-27), then fell out. But now I'm back in and am putting in the dedication to be at the top of my age group.

I did pretty good in my first one back for the lack of training, especially on the swim. I had not swam routinely since college, even when I was doing triathlon after college. Basically just relied on my raw talent. Well, that didn't work too well after 12 years of not swimming. I literally swam only about 12-15 times from Nov 05 to May 06 in preparation for this triathlon. Even so, I did a 24:00 flat in the swim - not bad for not swimming at all. I made a mistake and did not put on my bike jersey prior to the swim - so I fought with it a little and wasted precious seconds in this transition. The worst part was getting on the bike in the frigid weather and being wet, totally spent from not swimming. It took about 15 minutes into the bike to get rid of the hallucinations and fatigue. I figure the swim took at least 2:00 minutes off my bike. My bike was 1:12:28. I had been training much faster, even doing the course lots of times. Transitions were very speedy. Definately will do even better in 2007. The run is my worst area. I did a 48:04. Need to improve a lot in 2007. Goal for 2007 is 2:20:00.
