Very hot day... heat index around 100. Water temps varied greatly depending if you were in the channel or near the shoreline. Flood tide, so the water was pushing to the left pretty much the entire time. Of course the first 1.5 miles is a left bend so everyone stays towards the left. At every piling it was a struggle to swim into the current and get past without being pushed out from under the bridges.
I stayed with a small group of swimmers moving at a decent clip for the first 2 miles before I became frustrated and decided to swim more towards the center of the bridges. That was a mistake. Once I was off on my own I lost my rhythm and and floundered. Also I think I went out a little hard in the first 2 miles, so I'm sure that didn't help. Next time I swim this race I'll have to join a masters team and do some swims over 6k for prep.
