This was my second Marine Corps Marathon. The weather was fine, not bad but not great, quite humid with later temperatures getting pretty warm! I managed my "I'd be happy goal" of breaking 4 hours, my stretch goal was probably a bit optimistic (3:40), and my "I'd be really happy goal" I thought I'd for sure make (3:50) based on my training.
Overall my training was fine, it was my taper that wasn't fine. I ran the Baltimore Half Marathon two weeks before and due to the heat and the excitement I probably expended too much energy. Halfway through the Marathon I felt spent. That second half was all mind games - getting from one light post to the next and trying to convince myself not to walk, it was a tough finish but I'm glad I stuck it out.
Note to self, and others out there, a half marathon two weeks before a marathon isn't the best idea unless you're in excellent shape or you take it easy.
The Marine Corps Marathon is an amazing event although a bit popular. The course is flat and fast and well marked and crowd support is pretty good as far as marathons go. Be sure to note the day that registration opens and register early as it closes very fast!
