IRON GIRL COLUMBIA SPRINT TRIATHLON
August 23, 2009 (Sunday)
TRIATHLON: 1000 yards lake swim, 17.5 mile bike (hilly), 3.4 mile run (hilly)
COLUMBIA, MD @ Centennial Park
Race Number 1591
First Sprint Triathlon BUMMER!!
I feel like I prepared for this race as best as I could. A year before I started running learned how to ride a bike and finally finished a lap in the pool. This was my first sprint triathlon. It was really nice to see familiar faces in the crowd. I attempted my first sprint triathlon and did not complete the course. The .62m swim, 17.5 mile bike and 3.4 m run course is difficult and hilly. The biggest thing is that you have an hour to complete the swim but a total 4.5 hours to finish from the start of your wave.
SWIM: The swim was my biggest obstacle. I was in wave 8 of 13 waves. It seemed so long but I kept pushing. However, I guess my pushing wasnt enough. I went way pass the hour cutoff with about 200 yards still to go. All the waves behind me passed me. I was the last swimmer. The swim official boated over to let me know that I was too far passed the cutoff; I was in the water too long and would not be allowed to continue. They were concerned that I would be too exhausted to bike and my safety would be an issue.
As I exit, I tried not to cry but that didnt last. I felt horrible, humiliated and like such a failure. I was tired but I felt like the bug/cold infection I got the week before was pretty gone. I was on my last day of antibiotics on race day. However, once I got out of the water, I couldnt stop coughing. In fact, I have not stopped coughing yet. I think I have eaten passed the recommended limit of cough drops already.
Anyway, everyone kept trying to comfort me and encourage me to try again next year. I left the park because I just felt horrible and kept crying.
That was my day.
