Race Report:

KELLY ST. PATRICKS DAY SHAMROCK 5K
March 15, 2009 (Sunday)
RACE TYPE: 3.1 MILES (5K)
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND

I finished my second race of 2009. Today was the Shamrock 5k followed by the St. Patricks Day Parade in downtown Baltimore. It was a bleak, 40 degree, rainy day for the race and parade.

In support of my friend, Carol, I agreed to walk the race with her at her pace. There were over 3000 participants. We had to walk about a half of a mile from where we parked to the starting line. It was a good warm up walk because we were hot by the time I got there and had to take our jackets off. We lined up towards the back of the pack.

From our position it took us about 2 minutes to cross the starting line. I encouraged Carol to run and she wanted to run because she felt guilty in making me walk. I told her the goal of the race was for me to get her across the finish line whether she walks, run or crawl. We started at a light jog and tried to keep an easy pace. We would pick a light or a building way down the street to run to, and then take a walk break. It turn out that we took a walk break at each half mile or so. We passed mile one at 13.41 and mile two at 28.52. The course was relatively flat.

We took a walk break right before the finish line because I wanted to make sure she had enough energy to sprint thru the finish line. We crossed the finish line at the same time. We did great and I think she underestimated herself because her pace was good. Look at what we can do when we put our mind to it.

Finally the finish line!! FREE BEER!!! Hey, but I dont drink beer but she does. I wish I did, there was a lot of beer.
