This is a great race but does take some patience in terms of logistics. Highly recommend car pooling. If you plan to stay in DC ride to packet pick up and pre race meeting or just go straight for a parking garage and pay $8 flat rate. Drop off at transition was a nightmare as I think the Police were out to make up for some budget deficits. Seriously parking is scarce and if you drive have someone drop you off and circle round.

HUGE transition, nicely marked with row numbers, well lit and well organized.

I arrived at the race site at 6:00 AM got set up and then went through the usual morning rituals. The swim pen was a bit disorganized, they did not stage the different swim waves so everyone just went for the front but it sorted itself out. I was in wave 9. Sure this got worse with the later waves.

Swim - Water was great, little choppy but nothing major. I must say this was the busiest swim I have been in, not sure why because the waves did not seem very large, there was a lot of contact and swimming over people. All went well until I took a huge gulp of water (it tasted quite nice) but really did not agree with my breathing, lost about 30 seconds to sort myself out. Remainder of the swim was great. Getting out was super easy, they had set up a really nice ramp.

T1 great transition with the exception of my helmet, the TT helmets are really tight and I got my strap caught inside the helmet so had to take it off and put it back on again.

Bike very nice fast and flat course, I rode hard but even. It was not too crowded and people kept to the right. I only got passed by 3 people which I was really happy about.

T2 in and out

Run very nice and flat, little too warm for me but I performed ok.

Nutrition:

PB&J bagel
Banana
1 Gu on bike
1 20 ounce bottle Powerade
1 Accelerade gel on run (swear it was off, had to spit half of it out, it was all lumpy)
water on head at each station and a sip or two of Powerade.

Excellent post race activities. Will more then likely do it again next year.
