About six weeks ago my sister-in-law convinced me to run this race. Previously, my longest run had been 10 miles, and with thoughts of doing a 1/2 Iron next year, I thought this would be a good introduction to this distance. Probably 50% of the field were using this as a taper race for the Marine Corps in two weeks, my brother & sis-in-law included. I had one long training run prior to this -- a 13 mile run last Sunday. In retrospect it was probably a bit too close.
A friend and I started out together and ran negative splits to the half-point, then I fell off the pace. The uphill grind to Lake Montebello in the open sun became difficult. Then wind and heat then bacame a factor, as coming down 33rd street in the shade and breeze I became totally chilled. From there it became a challenge to finish the race. All those d@#% hills! Brother and sis-in-law caught and passed me on the last mile. They offered to stay along, but I waved them off -- I was not too much company at that point. Across the finish line I grabbed a heat blanket and was feeling better in a matter of minutes. I did pass on the Michelob Ultras.
This was my final race of the year, which has me thinking about next season!
