The report is kind of long, so bear with me...but it was my first olympic distance. I have done two IG (2008 and 2009). Also - being an athlete is new to me, like 2-3 years new....This is actually my first real race report, too. Last years's IG report was sub-par, b/c that's how I felt after the race.
I woke up on time at 4.20am, and tried to see if denial of the rain would make it stop - I heard thunder. SO much for that. Had my coffee and whole wheat toast with PB an J for the road. Put on my music in the car as my husband drove. Got to park, out of car in downpour for body marking (my favorite part, but it all washed away!)
Ended up putting on my wetsuit in the rain, and just left my gear in the bag under my bike. Didn't see the sense in laying it all out. My husband was doing the run part of a relay for the second time, so he was able to be with me in transtion, which helps, as he is the organized one! More on him later...
I felt the worst part was the waiting...I was wave 12, and I kept struggling with the war in my belly, trying to eat, feeling nauseus, wanting to JUST GET GOING, keeping panic at bay....3min before getting in the water, on an impulse, I called a friend, and the sound of her voice calmed me for the first time in 3 days...the water was gloriously warm, and I was ready to swim WIDE. I was so happy in the water, I couldn't believe I was actually doing this!!!
Swim: 39.29 I started the swim, but swam too hard, too soon, and panicked when i was short of breath. Panic in the water happens each race, and each time I deal with it. This time with a joke (Two cannibals are eating a comedian. One looks at the other and says 'Does this taste funny to you?" silly, but cracks me up every time!), and getting on my back to catch my breath. I had to do this 2-3 times during the swim, but managed to finish with a decent time for me. Had a smile on my face getting out of water. (My best swim time ever!)
Bike 2.01.16: Forgot to have power bar in transition - but had previously taped a gu to my bike (felt kind of hard core doing that!) The bike was lonely (being a late wave) but doable, but hard. I thoroughly enjoyed most of, tried to stay in the moment of 'I am doing an Olympic Tri!! - and it is not raining!" On 108 return, was very uncomfortable on bike,quads and bottom complaining, I was close to tears in anticipation of 6.2 mile run (my weakest of the three). "How was I going to do that?!"
Run 1.19.39: Got into transition to find my husband (and best friend), waiting for me, so he could do the run with me. Changed, ate, and headed out, with hubby by my side. Let me tell you, there are worse things than doing a 6.2 mile with your husband telling you how proud of you he is, how amazing he thinks you are for doing this, how impressed he is, even after 17 years of marriage, 2 years of engagement, and 4 years of dating before that...., how amazed our children are by their mother, how you have motivated others...He hadn't trained properly for his run, and didn't care for his time, so he ran with me. What a guy!
Got me thru....on the way back into the park I realized that it was almost over, and I had a pang of sadness - it's only the first time once! Wasn't sure how I was going to sprint to the finish - went into my head and found my inner 'rabbit'...(I usually am the turtle - slow and steady wins the race ) Sprinted to the finish line with kids, and the announcer saying my name, and "Now she is an athlete, whether she wants to be or not!" I want to be!
What a great race! What an amazing time!! I am still floating high! Even got a hug from Sadj!
