I was the swimmer for a Oly distance relay team. I had about 2/3 of a good swim; there was lots of body contact early and I kept feeling I was being forced left from all of it, but I was sighting well and just kept on moving forward. However, after the second turn back towards shore I just couldn't seem to pick out any of the buoys or even the heads in front of me and I got completely disoriented more than once.
Arpad says in his report: "Lovely water temps. At one point on the way back I saw a couple of guys get up and walk along the sandbank, they were gaining on others. Wonder if that is allowed?"
During one of the times I was trying to reorient I discovered that I could stand, so while I was regaining my composure, etc, I started walking so at least I was still moving forward. As far as I know, there's nothing against this.
Anyway, I ended up 3 minutes slower than my target (38:03). While my biker and runner had outstanding races the difference in my swim time pretty much kept the team off the podium.
On of the fun things about relay is being able to go all out on one event with no need to hold anything back (biking for Celebration was a blast!) But, if that one event doesn't go well it leaves a bitter aftertaste.
I'm really looking forward to Iron Girl, the first race of 2010 where I'm doing a full swim/bike/run!
