Comment: MMTC Prepared Me Well For My First Columbia Tri

Race Report:

First off, Wanted to thank the group for your warm welcome, loads of advice, and challenging prep training workouts! I felt really good going into the race. This is my second Oly, did Philadelphia last year at 3:02 and think it is easier and flatter than Columbia, by far. I'm very happy with the progress I feel that I have made since last year.

AG 45-49, division place: 55 out of 112
gender place: 362
time: 2:41:51.76
swim: 30:58
tran1: 2:46
bike: 1:17:02
tran2: 1:28
run: 49:41

Swim:

This is my weakest area and I spent a lot of time in the pool over the winter, including doing the 4 week Columbia swim clinic with a couple fellow MMTC members. This really helped me with understanding the form factor. I have work to do next for improving the speed, but am really happy with my performance thus far. Best thing I could do was to participate in the masters swim race the week before. I was very comfortable with the course Sunday morning. However, I was not comfortable being kicked, clawed, and swam over. I was able to hold my own, and stay ahead of the wave behind me, for the most part.

T1:

Used group tips and had my suit to the waste on the way. Got out quickly, no issues. Left my shoes clipped in the bike and that worked well, due to RBR practice. Can't imagine running up the hill wearing the shoes. Process was good, can work on speed to shave off some more time.

Bike:

Slow start getting into the shoes on the clips. Just needs more practice. First time without socks, no issues. Goal on the bike was to average 20 mph, did 19.5 in practice thought I could squeeze out another .5mph. However, still a little timid on the down hills in the aeros on the month old Shiv. Happy with 19.5. Should improve with confidence, but not ready to totally let go yet.

T2:

In/Out felt quick even with putting on socks. Good idea to take a bag of stuff on the way and assemble while running.

Run:

Ran the course Thursday with Stephan. Planned a 8:30-9 minute pace training run, but Stephan wouldn't have any of that and we pushed a 7:59. It was pretty easy to replicate the exact same run on Sunday, using negative splits. I crossed the finish at sub 7 pace for the last .2 miles. Possible to do it faster next year?

Great race overall. My wife and daughter enjoyed the venue as well, cheering me on. We were all overwhelmed by the MMTC set-up and support structure. I look forward to doing my share. Thanks for your help!
