Race Report:

Arrived with the family and JC on Thursday afternoon for the Saturday race and stayed at JC's sister-in-laws house which was awesome. Easy 30 min bike and 15 min run with JC on Friday morning. Check in process was easy. Pasta, bread, banana, and water for dinner the night before the race.

Did not sleep great, but that is to be expected. Probably got alteast 5 hours though. PB&J and Scratch labs lemon drink for breakfast. Finished food 3 hours prior to race. Continued drinking Scratch until we had to get on the trolly to go to the swim start. Gel and water 15 minutes before start.

Decided to go with full wetsuit for swim because air temp was cold. Should have gone with the sleeveless. Still not comfortable with the full and pretty sure it slows me down. Water temp was not that cold, but for some reason I was chilly. Swim was with current which made for fast swim. Never got comfortable probably because of full wetsuit. Also, missed the turn buoy by a lot and had to be directed by paddle border. Had to climb up a ladder to get out of water. Stuggled to climb out and then left leg cramped badly. Had to lay on ground for short time and massage cramps out. Luckily got rid of cramps and ran to wetsuit stripper. First time doing this and the wetsuit stripper had a hard time getting my wetsuit off. Next time I would be better off running the 3/4 miles to T1 and taking the suit off myself. Wasted too much time.

Put all wetsuit my T1 bag and grabbed my bike. Thought I was supposed to hand off bag to someone, but noticed no one else was running with their bag. Tried asking others what to do with my bag, but they all looked at me like I was an idiot. Someone finally told me to my leave bag at the bike rack. Once again, lots of time wasted.

Started riding and legs felt amazing. Developed gas cramps in my stomach and wished I had some Pepto. First time this has ever happened. Not sure why. Mostly flat course with some false flats. Constant wind, but it was not too bad. Did not wear aero helmet, but will wear it next time. Gel every 30 minutes along with water and Sratch. Unfortunately power and energy dropped drastically 40 miles in. Had to spin easy until T2. Got passed by a bunch of riders the last 10 to 15 miles. This was probably due to lack of riding. Only got in 2 3 hour rides and a lot of weeks only got in 2 rides, not the preferred 3. Also, I think I will switch to First Endurance next race. Not sure I'm sold on Scratch labs.

Had planned on running 7:30s the entire run, but was not even close. Started okay on run, but instantly realized my Garmin pace function was dead. Put in new battery next time. Was planning on walking the aid station at every 30 min and eating a gel with water, but ended up walking the aid stations very early on. Just tried to run to the next aid station so I could walk for a little. I was hurting big time. Only getting in 1 1:30 run was not ideal. Lots of 1 hour runs, but they don't cut it. Stomach was empty and I was starving early on. Made comment to someone that I could have eaten a whole pizza. May need more calories on the bike next time. May try adding 1 or 2 Honey Stinger waffles. Started to drink coke around mile 7 because I wanted something different and it tasted good.

Finished but was in world of hurt. Thought my whole body was going to cramp and I was cold even though the temp was in the upper 70s. Went to the med ten for first time ever and got wrapped in metallic blanket and drank a coke. Felt better after about 45 minutes.

Had hoped to break 5 hours, but never really gave myself a chance. Got busy with work and did not keep up the proper training the last 5 weeks prior to the race. Looking forward to Eagleman in 2013! I raced Eman in 2002 and 2007, so it's been a while.
