Comment: Great start to the weekend (minus the crash)

Race Report:

I really enjoy the Osprey triathlon; it was the race that got me back into the sport in 2008. Last year, I remember someone (I think it was Steve Meninger) doing Osprey then Half Full in the same weekend and I thought that would be a good idea to get some stress on the body in prep for IMFL next month. My goal for the day was just to really push the bike and leave nothing in the tank at the end.

Swim: 38 th OA (Last year 71st OA)
A point-to-point swim with pretty choppy water and waves coming at us from the left. It was a tougher swim than in years past. I bought a new TYR Hurricane wetsuit and wore it last week for ChesapeakeMan and got 2 tears in it and sent it back. I ended up borrowing a full suit from a friend. It was a bit big and ended up filling with water around my chest and shoulders. Big improvement in the swim and I really owe the improvement to Doug Sarr. Only did 2 lessons with him but it has made a huge difference.

T1: :57, 10th OA

Bike: 23.3 mph, 5th OA
Felt really good on the bike. Funny thing was that for a loop course, I never really felt a significant head wind and felt cross winds. It went bad coming into transition. I decided to do a flying dismount and started too early, so I had to stay on one foot for longer than I would have liked. My left foot (the one I was standing on) twisted a bit causing my shoe to come out of my pedal and I went down hard. Road rash to both feet, legs, shoulder and hip.

T2: :46, 34th OA

Run: 6:30 pace, 2th OA
No socks for the bike and run made my feet hurt so bad and turned my shoes into a bloody mess. The crash scraped the skin off the top of 6 toes and every step felt like needles being driven into my toes. The first mile was 30 sec slower than I wanted because of all the pain in my feet and hip. Toward the end of the first mile the pain started to wane and I was able to pick up the pace a bit.

I was really happy with the finish overall. Made great improvements on the swim and bike from last year. I ended up being 22sec off the guy who finished 2nd OA. I can only wonder how I would have done if I didn’t fall and have to pick up the pieces at the end of the bike. Thanks to Jen and the kids for all the support. Ended the day with crabbing at Assateague Island and drove home for Half Full the next day.
