Notes
B & A Trail Marathon
Not even close to goal time (BQ is 3:35:00)
I haven't been sleeping well or feeling strong so I wasn't surprised.
Pulled my lower back out 12 days ago (cycling) and didn't see a PT and get it fixed until Friday morning (too late).
Mile markers were way off, felt like I was working too hard just to maintain my goal pace.
Rain on & off wasn't great, arm warmers got soaked and made me cold until I pulled them down.
When the wind picked up, it was from the WNW and was only hitting us hard from 16-19, then gave us a tailwind back.
1/2 marathon marker seemed right, but was around 1:50:00, so I knew I was going too slow. Decided to start walking the aid stations.
Quads started barking around 20, calves pre-cramped around 22, but never really cramped up. Better than last year (but also slower)
Feet really hurt, esp. after 20 miles, now I have many new blisters.

Pre-Race:
Flounder and double Ramen for dinner (done by 6:30)
Double Benadryl and melatonin before bed.
Reading by 10, asleep by 11, woke at 3:11, but got 57 minutes of deep sleep)
Alarm at 5:30, on the road by 6:30, arrived just past 7.

Race Day:
New race cap ($1), Tri-jersey, arm-warmers, shorts w/pockets.
No calve sleeves (for at work) or orthotics (big mistake)
Shoes have over 200 miles on them also.
2 x 5 oz bottles, one w/100 grams of maltodextrin
7 gels, one every 30 minutes, drinking malto in between
Refilled other bottle at water stops instead of stopping (until after 1/2)
Took Leg Cramp tablets for a couple of days before the race (not on race day), maybe they helped?

Pre Race Notes:
*Alarm set for 3:55AM. Carl drove to my house. On the road driving Tundra at 5:05AM. Drive took 1:50:00. Ate plain bagel before drive. Sipped Nuun during drive to RockyGap. Inflated tires to 27psi. Racked bike at 7th position last row in line with exit to transition area. Not the best spot. Pre swam out about 75yds before lifeguards called us back in. back and forth a few times in shallows.
=> drinking Nuun prerace seemed to help with cramps.
Swim:
Calm waters. Started mid pack of second wave @9:03AM. TT@1.10s. Mostly ignored TT. Sighting overall pretty good. Drifting left a little, but, not tool bad. Right side breathing only. In the mix with contact and drafting for the entire 1st lap. Got kicked in the face early on. Goggles leaked a little. Did a few breaststrokes to recover. Intentionally ran slowly to start of 2nd lap to calm breathing. Paused to completely catch breath before starting 2nd lap. Focused on completing right side rotation to swim straight. Never got panicky. Stopwatch at 22:10 getting out of water.
=> Open water swim practice really paid off. 2:30 faster than last year.
T1:
***FORGOT TO PUT ON CAMELBACK***
Did not wear gloves. Did not put shorts over tri shorts.
MTBike:
No water/camelback!!! Had to stop at every water stop ~6-7 times. Lots of traffic on singletrack 1st lap. Big mudholes at the bottom of the fireroad descents. Otherwise very dry. Course bypassed Evitts again this year. Cleared Horeshoe rockgarden both laps. Felt a little slow on gradual rocky climbs to top before boulder downhill but was still passing people. Passed lots of people on boulder downhill. Felt like rear tire was flat on 2nd lap and started riding cautiously to protect it. Think the new tire sidewalls are just more supple. No cramping.
=> Remember camelback, stupid.
T2:
TriShorts only. No problems
Run:
Legs fatigued but, not cramping until midpoint. Walked up Evitts and walked up the valley wall. Walk up valley wall was brutal. Legs really opened up on road, feeling pretty good. Not cramping.
=> Hill repeats really helped again this year. Maybe find steeper training climbs to help with valley wall climb and evitts.

=> Remember camelback, stupid.

Tuscan Chicken Tortellini (SavageMan) at Brenda's Pizzeria for dinner (w/milk)
Water bottle with 3 x No Cramps/Nuun/honey/maltodextrin concentrate on bike
Put 1/3 into Aero bottle with water before the start.
Woke at 6:15, left hotel at 7:15, arrive by 7:30 for 8:30 start.
Coffee, small-ish Bear Claw for breakfast.
Tried to eat muffin and NV Protein before start but couldn't, water then GU instead.
Since Valerie went to the bus, left my crocs & water bottle on the beach.
Took one of my 2 bike gels before the swim.

Swim:
Decided to record the race in Run mode so I could get my
Lava pants (should have worm sleeveless wetsuit for better breathing)
Clear swim mask (leaked right away, had to clear twice, should have checked)
Found some feet early, followed them mostly to the turtle turn around, no feet until the next buoy, then stayed with them most of the way back, lost them turning towards land, went too close to shore and had to come out to get the last buoy.
Solar glare was pretty bad, maybe should have used tinted goggles.
FB posted water temp: 74F, race morning 72.5F
Clear, 54F, Feels like 54F, Humidity 91%, Wind 1mph from W - by Klimat.app

T1:
Dried of with beach towel (too big) and put on thin socks and tri top (no gloves or arm warmers). Pulled up HR monitor from waistline.

Bike:
Did not get the tubular re-mounted on the front C50 and decided to use the heavier clincher Campy Zondas, front & rear) instead.
Disappointed to unclip on the Wall and not get another brick, but happy with my race overall, sneaking in under 7 hours.
Didn't set low enough gear and had a real problem getting started out of transition, even dropping one shoe, rookie mistake, forgetting how steep that 1st part it.
Started Edge 520 late.
Warmed up in sunshine before the massive downhills, going aero mostly and very comfortable going fast and passing many.
Start of the climb in Westernport felt like I was missing a gear, and heart-rate went from 135 to 177 quickly.
The right side was clear, so I went up, assuming I would be okay, but stopped hard when I popped a wheelie with my right leg and landed badly.
Tried to put that behind me and spend many hours in 1-1 climbing with lower back pain.
Standing the apex then reverse stretching helped a lot. Passed many, many riders, but also passed a few times.
Bike shorts kept being pulled down as I climbed seated, which doesn't normally happen.
Maybe it is a bad short/saddle combination?
No Team-Z on Killer Miller made it seem a bit harder, but wasn't cramping and had no issue.
Missed not being able to shift while aero, and shifting while climbing was not all that useful since I was in 1-1 often.

T2:
Started to change into dry socks, remembered to remove the bike shorts and ran with one of each sock.
Quick slug of Nuun and grabbed glasses, belt and hat.

Run:
Felt pretty good, but slow as usual these days.
Took No Cramps several times when I thought I felt one coming on.
Drank mostly Coke & water at each aid station, but took some Gatorade as well.
Took my GU at mile 10.
Hadn't been seeing anyone my age for a long time, then saw a guy with either 57 or 47 on his calf.
Quickly passed him and tried to keep it up in case he got motivated.
He hadn't and was just at the foot on the fire road as I finished it.
Crazy cramping started just off the fire road, but just kept shuffling.
Was at 6:46 at mile 12, giving 14 minutes to fish under 7.
Last aid station I drank double Gatorade and that pushed the cramps back for a while.

Pasta with meatballs for dinner
Melatonin, Advil PM and two Benadryl before bed (10:52pm-04:44am w/1:04 deep sleep (starting at 2:43am?)
Woke at 4:44 (with Stephanie) and left the house at 5:30 with 2 coffees and protein muffins, only ate one
Arrived about 7:30 for 8:34 start

Posted water temp: 74F
Gel with water before that start
Wore new dark goggles, vision seemed okay
Wore wetsuit for first time in a long time everything seemed okay
Got a little bit lost and headed across the harbor once and had to veer severely to get back on track return
Did not head directly for the squiggly man on final lap, instead, heading for the yellow buoy, then veering
No volunteers to help pull us out of the water

3 x Nuun, 3 x No Cramp, 2 x Gel and 3 x Maltodextrin concentrate pre-made
Filled aero-bottle with 3/8 and topped off with water, brought the extra, but did not drink from it
Neuvation c50 tires find inflated to 120 PSI in the morning.
Worked hard on the bike the entire time flat but rough roads do not roll fast.

Struggled to keep a stitch away on the run, right from the beginning.
Every time I tried to add some speed, the stitch came back.
Wore newer black MMTC tri Jersey which is very, very tight. Maybe too tight on the chest and I hate the shitty little pockets.

Double melatonin and single Tylenol PM before bed.
Taking one melatonin 2 hours early, then another right before bed (10:48) seems to work best. Got 1:19 of 5:51 deep sleep (19%)
Woke at 5:40 for the 9:30 race start, but 8:30 packet pickup.
Left with coffees and Bran muffin just after 6:00, arrived to overflow lot just after 8:00.
Drank all the coffee and ate 1/2 of the muffin while driving.
Walked with bike & bag (forgot gels in car) to packet pickup.
Labeled helmet & bike with help of woman to peel on patio, then racked bike well before 9:00 (Olympic start).
Racked bike with left over Nuun, honey, maltodextrin mix for Watermans and topped off with water.
After porta-potty, walked almost 1/2 mile back to Audi to get the gels.
Wore Garmin HRM around waist, under my Lava pants without a jersey.
Took gel and drank water before start.
Had spayed my tinted goggles in transition, rinsed in the warm water (70) and stood waiting for start.
One swimmer in wave one was pulled out by the Rescue boat and it was still in our way at the start, but not by the time we got there (barely)
Water was clean once we got past the dock and I found (and lost) feet several times.
Overall I really enjoyed the swim, being able to see the buoys and other swimmers on my left easily.
Did not put on socks before the bike (or run) and ran up the road barefoot, mostly in the grass.
No problem starting on the bike.
The course had gentle rolling hills (flat) and there was a bike race going the other way, which was fun to see.
No problems getting off the bike (flying dismount) and running,
but again, I was on the verge of a stitch to entire time, running around an 8 minute pace.
Saw Greg Elman coming at me before the U-turn, but couldn't reel him in.
In the end, it was a fun race but sprints are not really my thing.
Maybe I'll try the Olympic next year?
